Best Morning Exercises to Boost Energy and Focus

Getting active early in the day can make you more awake, improve your moods and get yourself ready for work or study. You don’t have to start training as hard as possible to reap these benefits. In the morning there is a brief session of mobility and no more than light cardio and strength training.

The “perfect” morning exercises consist of something that is easy to do, something that is manageable and something that is appropriate. Here are some of the best morning exercises you can do.

1. Full-Body Stretching

A gentle stretch is the simplest form of exercise following a few hours for rest. It can release tight muscles and invigorate your body for intensive exercises.

First go both arms up with elbows above your head. Then do shoulder rolls, side bends, circles at the ankles and a nice forward bend. Stretch it comfortably, holding any stretch for 15 to 20 seconds without bouncing or trying to force into and out of a painful stretch.

2. Marching in Place

Marching in place will help start you to ramp up your heart rate and you don’t need an enormous amount of space. Stand upright with up and down swinging arms, lift one at a time with knee lifting up.

Run, walk, or jog at a comfortable speed for 1 minute. Continue to rock knees up and/or speed up if they feel warm. Note: another possible exercise that can be a good option besides jogging or jumping is to use this exercise.

3. Bodyweight Squats

Squats target several big muscles of the lower body, such as the glutes, hips and thighs.

Stand with your feet around shoulder-width apart. Back to a chair position, bend knees and lift chest. Come back to the standing position and do 10-15 controlled reps.

It can be done while holding onto a sturdy chair for extra assurance and balance in case you are a beginner.

4. Wall Push-Ups

Wall pushups involve the chest, shoulders, arms, and core, but don’t put the same amount of stress on the wrists and upper body as regular floor pushups.

Set hands at a shoulder height on wall. Step back with feet slightly back, bend elbows and draw chest to wall. Move back to starting position. Complete 8 to 15 repetitions.

5. Standing Knee-to-Elbow Crunches

This is a standing core workout that demands balance, co-ordination and controlled movement.

Lightly place hands behind head. Raise right leg and draw left elbow towards right knee. Come back to starting position and repeat other side. Repeat the alternate exercise cycle for 30-60 seconds.

Do NOT pull on your neck. Use abdominal muscles instead of using your lower back.

6. Jumping Jacks or Step Jacks

Jumping jacks can give you a notched up increase of cardio activity and an uplift in alertness. Do them for 20-30 seconds, then take some rest, and repeat.

If this seems too intense, try step jacks for a more subdued exercise. Put one foot to each side with both arms held up and come back into the center with the same foot and both arms up; repeat with remaining foot and arms.

Institute a simple routine for mornings.Introduce a quick morning routine.

Mix the exercises together and perform as a circuit:

  1. 20 minutes of energizing exercises like aerobic dancing or jogging.3. Stretching from head to toe for two minutes.
  2. Walks in place for one minute
  3. Twelve bodyweight squats
  4. Ten wall push-ups
  5. Knee-to-elbow crunches for 1-minute period (standing)
Cycling for 30 seconds or jumping jacks and step jacks for 30 seconds

Complete the circuit again (if there is extra time).

Slowly approach the exercises, pick those that you’re comfortable with and stick to the movements. A simple morning activity that you can do over a long period of time is preferable to a hard jog you would not be able to sustain for long periods.
